The counties included in the study were Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
According to the statistics provided in the report, approximately 32,000 people are killed in car crashes each year in the U.S. – 90 victims per day. The CDC went further in its analysis, projecting what the numbers would be if the U.S. car crash death rate was the same as Belgium – which has the second highest death rate. The projection showed that there would have been 12,000 fewer people killed and $140 million less in medical expenses spent. Sweden has the lowest car crash death rate in the group, and if the U.S. had that rate, almost 25,000 victims would be alive each year, and $281 million saved in medical costs.
When it comes to preventable accidents, the U.S. also ranks high. We have the second highest number of people killed in drunk driving accidents (31 percent), and one-third of those drunk drivers were also speeding. If people would finally get the message how deadly drinking and driving is, 10,000 lives could be saved each year.
