A brain injury is defined as being an injury from a result of any action that impedes on the brain causing damage; therefore, leading to the brain’s functioning to be hindered.

Brain injuries can occur in many different ways. Some are sudden, through a blunt force trauma or stroke and others are the results of a prolonged illness or disease. Brain injuries can be separated into two primary types: a traumatic brain injury and an acquired brain injury.

Common Causes of a TBI

A traumatic brain injury is categorized as having varying degrees of damage to the brain which has happened from some type of external force including, but not limited to:

  • A slip and fall
  • Sports injuries
  • Vehicular accidents
  • Off road vehicle accidents
  • Blow to the head
  • Gun accident
  • Physical violence

When a TBI happens, the brain is usually pushed against the skull with extreme force causing bleeding, bruising, and swelling on or around the brain. TBI’s can result from a forceful jolt and cause no penetration or on the other hand, penetration of the skull could have occured.

The degree of damage from a TBI will depend on many factors such as:

  • The force of the impact
  • Whether there is bleeding around the brain
  • Whether the damage can be repaired

Common Causes of an ABI

Acquired brain injuries is a general term used for injuries that encompass a TBI. These injuries can be caused by an internal problem, such as a medical condition, as opposed to an external event such as a slip and fall. ABIs cannot be inherited, but can occur at anytime from the point of birth. Common causes of ABIs include:

  • Exposure to a toxic substance
  • Strangulation
  • Near drowning
  • Choking
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Tumor
  • Aneurysm
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Encephalitis
  • Meningitis
  • Infection

Both types of brain injuries can cause oxygen deprivation and lead to an anoxic brain injury which are very serious and often cause permanent brain damage. Side effects of ABIs and TBIs are broad and could include:

  • Cognitive impairment
  • Memory loss
  • Speech or language problems
  • Inability to concentration
  • Mood swings
  • Aggression
  • Insomnia
  • Inability to balance
  • Breathing problems
  • Vision or hearing problems

  • + More
